Portraits of little girls, mid-19th c. In the 1840’s, technical innovations in photography whittled down exposure times from a whopping 30 minutes down to about 30 seconds. Because this was still a pretty long stretch of time, photographers made use of the “Brady table,” an adjustable prop which the subject could lean against. Named after American photographer and Civil War photojournalist Matthew Brady, the extra support helped portraits come out less blurry, but made subjects look a little stiff and less natural. -- source link
