Children dig potatoes from the frozen earth on a Soviet collective farm, ca. 1933, Donetsk, Ukraine. Despite the smiles on some of their faces, these children were experiencing one of the worst famines of the twentieth century, the Holodomor of 1932-33. Joseph Stalin punished the rebellious peasants of Ukraine (who did not want to hand over their land to collective farms) by exporting food from the region and covering up the resulting human suffering. Between 3 and 7.5 million people died of starvation. {WHF} {HTE} -- source link
