On Diwali the ghotis (Bengalis from West Bengal ) observe Dipannita Lakshmi pujo. In the post while a mask of the devi is used, traditionally only a pot (referred to as Lokkhir jhanpi) filled with cowries is worshipped as the devi. Cowries were once used as money in the Bengal province (Bengal, Odisha and Bihar primarily), hence they symbolised the devi. No murtis are used during this puja. Traditionally a cane pot was covered with red cloth and cowries were stitched onto it. The pot was filled with cowries and it was placed on an alpona. Later this simple pot was replaced with silver and gold ones, especially among the wealthy families, but cowries were still used. Even today this practice is in vogue. -- source link
