39adamstrand:4 April 1961 - The Geo. M. Verity arrives in Keokuk, IA.The SS Thorpe was built in Dubuque, IA in 1927, and was one of 4 towboats that worked the northern part of the Mississippi River, and the first to move barges from St. Louis, MO to St. Paul, MN.In 1940 the Thorpe was sold to Armco Steel Corporation, which re-named it the George M. Verity.The Verity retired in 1960, and the following years was given as a gift to the town of Keokuk to use as a museum. The Verity was named a National Historic Landmark in 1989. -- source link
