Stead published an article criticizing the safety standards of passenger liners, most notably the lack of lifeboats.Six years later he wrote a novel, From the Old World to the New, in which a ship collides with an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sinks.In April of 1912 he was invited to address a peace conference by President Taft.
