cutie-potoo-ty:These two were supposedly based on a real couple, who said they wouldn’t board a life boat as long as there were younger people still aboard the ship. They both went below deck, presumably to their room, and that’s the last time they were seen -cries-That’s Isador and Ida Strauss, who died together on the Titanic the night of April 14-15, 1912. He urged his wife to board on a lifeboat but she refused and was witnessed to have said “We have lived together for many years. Where you go, I go.”I do like reblogging this one, but mostly just to correct some historical inaccuracies (and because let’s face it… these two are a beautiful example of a truly loving relationship, up to the bitter end).Mr. and Mrs. Straus did, in fact, stay together when the Titanic sank, but they did not go below deck. According to multiple eyewitness accounts, they instead presented a brave face to the people around them, instead staying above, sitting together in deck chairs until a huge wave washed them overboard. Isidor’s body was recovered… Ida’s was not.The words she spoke were very similar, reported by survivors standing nearby to have been: “I will not be separated from my husband. As we have lived, so will we die, together.”Bystanders later recalling the incident called it a remarkable showing of love and devotion. The truth is as amazing as the fiction. They presented themselves with tact and poise in their final moments, providing inspiration for the frightened masses around them. -- source link
