#Repost @bodyimage_therapist (@get_repost)・・・The brain uses the best coping strategy it knows in the moment congruent to the level of personal distress, and actively works to regulate distress/emotions. No one has the right to judge your experience past or current concerning the source of distress or even your way of coping. Not me, not your friend, not your family, or your inner critic. Using shame based tactics in effort to change a way of coping undermines the life preserving function of it, it’s like going into survival mode. If we don’t approach the lived experience of another or ourselves with compassion (I’m not talking about pity), we have failed to provide a safe space for our fellow human to unpack challenging parts of their life, the same kind of space we’d want to unpack our own challenges. .. Learning new coping strategies takes time, and they need to be practiced when the distress isn’t at a peak. Our brain uses a particular coping strategy based on prior effectiveness - basically if it works it uses it, even if it leads to further future distress. Just as a note: I am specifically talking about coping strategies involving food that have become distressing for the person. I also have a post about how food is emotional, that we do use food to regulate emotions sometimes.
