chamerionwrites:unoobang:Please don’t go..#so i….really really care a lot about those two #i mean i still need time to untangle all my feelings #because even though the movie acknowledged the impact of paige’s death through rose’s arc; we still know very little about her #but it does really matter to me that we finally got a story of sibling love #outside of the sacred bloodline of the skywalker and luke and leia’s almost mystical bond #i mean we’ll probably know more about their genealogy later on; but at this point i’m just going to assume #that they were just ‘nobodies’ indeed; a pair of orphaned exploited children #who at some point realized that they had the power to say ‘no’; that they had the duty to do so for themselves and for the galaxy #there is so much in sw which is about a vertical vision of family’s transmission and inheritance #(kylo and leia vs leia and the organas but also what i’ve heard about poe’s family) #so now let’s talk about sisterhood as a medium for political awakening #about forms of love which do not have the all-encompassing appeal of romantic love bw chosen ones #but which are just as powerful and just as deep #I DONT KNOW I JUST FEEL SO SAD (via lagren0uille)#YESSSSS bless these tags #this is part of what i mean about tlj posing a challenge to the concept of dynasties #so much of star wars is about family legacy - about things passed down from parents to their children #(the force for the skywalkers; piloting/resistance for poe; lyra’s fierceness and galen’s regret united and realized in jyn #the legacy of leia’s adoptive parents and of saw as jyn’s adoptive father) #and there’s nothing wrong with that! I enjoy those stories! I love the way they all build layers onto this theme of parents and children #but it’s still a dynastic sort of vision of family even when there’s no royalty involved #and this is one of the things that’s subversive about tlj #not just tfa but the whole of star wars canon sets us up to expect that the answer to luke’s question ('who are you?’) #will be located in the truth of who rey’s parents are - and then the movie gleefully rips the rug out from that expectation #rey is not defined by her inheritance and kylo is not defined by his bloodline and family can be sisters! #t’s a fresh take that’s also shaped by the old stories and i love it. i love it when movies play with audience expectations this way (via chamerionwrites) -- source link
