Republic of Indonesia, 1945, 1 Roepiah. Sukarno, with depictions of an active volcano. From the 17th century, first the Dutch and then the Japanese (from 1942) occupied Indonesia, until 1945. Two days after the surrender of Japan in August 1945, the influential nationalist leader Sukarno declared independence and was appointed president. The Netherlands tried to reestablish their rule, and an armed and diplomatic struggle ended in December 1949, when in the face of international pressure, the Dutch formally recognised Indonesian independence. -- source link
