Maia: I’m nonbinary and I always have been. Even before I knew that word. Image: a seedling sprouting and growing its first leaves. Maia: I don’t strongly relate to a trans narrative of “before and after” transition; rather before and after I gained the language to describe myself. Page 2Maia’s narration: I often conceptualize my growing understanding of gender identity as the rings of a tree. Image: One quarter of a tree stump seen from above so the rings clearly show. Rings are labeled as they grown outwards: Learned the words gay and lesbian. Learned the word bisexual. Learned the word queer. Learned the word transgender. Learned the word nonbinary. Learned the word aromantic. Page 3Image: Head and shoulders of Kori, in front of a starry night sky. Kori: Meanwhile, I don’t think I have “always been” nonbinary! Image: a stone, a single crystal, a geode, a group of crystals. Kori’s narration: I was once a little girl, for a while I was a lesbian, a trans man, and am now nonbinary. I was those things at those times. Page 4Kori’s narration: I think of my gender as a location in a 3D universe, rather than stops on a timeline that leads to an ultimate truth. Image: a night sky with stars labeled: Cis girl→ Lesbian→ Trans man→ Nonbinary→ Kori’s narration: I want to feel like my nonbinary identity is legitimate even if it’s not the “final” way I will identify myself. Page 5Image: Head and shoulders of Kori, who appears to hold a small galaxy floating above their hands. Kori: This is what I love so much about the nonbinary-umbrella: instead of a label that prescribes a universal experience, it encompasses infinite unique experiences outside of our gender constructs!Image: Maia, holding eir arms up in excitement and smiling widely. Maia: I love that your experience is so different from mine! That’s part of why I wanted to talk to you about it. Page 6Image: a spectrum line, labeled “M” on one end, “F” on the other, with the middle section labeled “Nonbinary”. Maia: Many people (myself included) start out with this very simple visualization of gender as a line. Image: Maia unfolding a large roadmap. Maia: Later, this idea unfolded for me like a map. Image: an expanding space full of stars. Maia narration: Now, my idea is expanding into 3D space! Thanks in part to you! Page 7Kori’s narration: And my gender conception was expanded thanks to the work of friend and fellow, Melanie Gillman. Image: a small zine titled “Nonbinary” by Melanie GillmanI feel like I’m part of a growing and thinking network of people who want to feel connected to the world through gender– and not in spite of it! <3Image: Small full figure of Kori growing roots from their feet.
