I just finished this novel, and I found it stunning. It ticks many of my boxes – girls’ school, closed atmosphere, suppressed passions – and is a deliciously immersive summer read. The heat and the landscape of Australia, its light, its flora and fauna, are important characters in their own right. Parts of the mystery at the novel’s heart are, of course, iconically unresolved. But there are several storylines which do have resolutions, and resolutions that feel dramatically secure and right. Lindsay’s sentences are delightfully hypnotic. This particular edition offers an interesting peek at classifying YA fiction. The library decided it was, perhaps because many of the protagonists are between the ages of 14 and 18. It’s certainly a book about adolescent confidence and vulnerability, among other things… but it doesn’t read to me like a book designed for adolescents. If anyone else out there has read it, I’d welcome discussion! -- source link
