Your Fave Is Catholic: Gregory MaguireKnown for: Beloved author of adult literature, children’s literature, short stories, & non-fiction, he is best known for being the author of Wicked: the Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as other Oz related follow-up books such as Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, & Out of Oz, which take the classic Oz books by L. Frank Baum as well as the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz & retell them from a new perspective & in a very adult way. He initially started his career writing stories for children, & while he still writes for children, he found major success writing novels for adults starting in the 1990s. Other notable books he has written include Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, Mirror, Mirror, The Next Queen of Heaven, & many more. Besides writing books, he also occasionally does book reviews for the Sunday New York Times.Evidence of Faith: According to a Vice interview in which Gregory discusses his book After Alice (which is a new look at Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice books), he was asked if his book was touching on social themes found in the original Alice books, & in his response he directly states that he is Catholic. He brings this up to connect how in Catholic school, he learned about Dante’s Divine Comedy & found similarities to the underground depiction of Hell & the Greek afterlife of Hades to Alice’s journey underground. He also answers the question with YES, & also compares it to the Underground Railroad, which happened during the same period when the Alice books were written. In this same interview, he also further shares his Catholic life when he tells of an anecdote where his strict Catholic babysitter flipped out over the overtly sexual content of his first adult novel. -- source link
