They spend years renovating and repurposing entire city blocks building stadiums, fields, swimming pools, parking lots, hotels, training facilities, etc, to host the different sporting events and afterwards, they cost too much to maintain or use for anything else. Majority of the time they end up abandoned. It used to be worth it for struggling cities to invest in hosting the olympics because it would boost tourism for years to come and they’d get a profitable return. The city and people would benefit from it. Over time the standards for hosting have increased due to the growing logistical size of the olympics (more countries participating/larger teams/expanding to new sports and just our natural evolution of technological demands) and it has gotten to the point where the cost outweighs the return. The article talked about how this has caused cities who’ve hosted in the past to decide not to host again. A simple solution, I believe, would be to stop changing the host city every time and decide on a permanent olympics location. But I know the governments of the world would never go for such a simple solution ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ^^^ thank you for that addition. that’s ridiculous yo. -- source link
