The Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital was originally a gunpowder factory in the 17th century but then morphed into this beast of a hospital. It became the world’s largest on the eve of the French Revolution. The painting on the final image (“A Clinical lesson at the Salpetriere”) shows the time when the clinical lead Jean-Martin Charcot made the hospital renowned for neuropsychiatry.
