The Nintendo Super ScopeWhen Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Entertainments System, they came out with the Zapper. When they created the Super Nintendo, they also created the Nintendo Super Scope. The Super Scope was the next generation of light gun technology, and was used with around a dozen games for the Super Nintendo system. It was a light gun like the Zapper, a system where when the trigger was pulled, the screen went blank for a frame, targets turned to white boxes, and the gun detected the light difference to score either a hit or a miss. The Super Scope used the same concept only it worked with infrared light. This made the gun more reliable, but also meant that game designers couldn’t use red in their games. Since it was designed for 1990’s era cathode ray tube televisions, it will not work on modern plasma, LCD, high definition, or flat screen TV’s. The gun itself was shaped to mimic a shoulder fired rocket launcher or bazooka, unlike the Zapper which was a pistol. One of the flaws of the Super Scope was that the trigger, as well as a pause button were located at the top of the rear of the gun. This meant that a right handed user held the gun with the right hand and worked the controls with the left. For players in a long gaming marathon, this could be a bit uncomfortable. More importantly the Super Scope was self powered, whereas the Zapper plugged into the system. Thus the Super Scope required six AA batteries, which were drained quicker than margaritas during happy hour. As a result, the Super Scope wasn’t as popular as it’s predecessor, the Zapper. -- source link
