The Nintendo Power Glove,One of the most interesting accessories to the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Nintendo Power Glove was actually not affiliated with Nintendo at all, instead being designed by Grant Goddard and Samuel Cooper from the toy company Abrams Gentile Entertainment, and manufactured by Mattel. Introduced in 1989, the Power Glove was a type of controller fitted into a motion sensitive glove. Thus, the video game could be controlled by arm, hand, and finger movements. These movements were tracked by a pair of sensors which were placed on the television, which translated the movements into actions on the video game. Originally the Power Glove was designed for two games; Super Glove Ball and a beat em’ up game called Bad Street Brawler. I remember actually owning Super Glove Ball, finding it a very unusual but ultimately pointless game. Eventually the Power Glove was programmed for most other NES games, and a code book came with the product which allowed the Power Glove to recognize which game was being played. There was only one major problem with the Power Glove, it didn’t really work all that well. Some games worked magnificently with it, most were awkward and difficult to play with the glove. Many games worked so badly with the glove that they were practically unplayable, some games didn’t work at all. When all was said and done, it was much funner and easier to play with a regular NES controller, which was actually attached to the Power Glove just in case it didn’t work. Regardless, the Power Glove sold well, selling 100,000 units and making Mattel around $88 Million dollars. The success of the Power Glove was mostly due to its novelty. In addition, the glove was also featured in a numerous magazines, advertisements, and movies. The Power Glove was even the centerpiece of a movie entitled The Wizard, about a boy who travels the country in order to compete in a video game tournament. Needless to say, mere ownership of a Power Glove made a youngster significantly cooler than his or her peers regardless of the fact that it usually didn’t work. -- source link
