When I moved to Alberta I packed our stuff into a shipping crate called a uBox (by uhaul - Highly recommend). . . I spent months paring down our belongings and packing away, as efficiently as possible, everything I deemed “necessary.” . . Some things were practical. Pots and pans, dishes, so we didn’t have to scramble to buy necessities like this once we arrived (knowing we’d arrive broke). . . There were boxes of other things, though. I opened them and said to myself, “What the fuck Caitlin? You really thought you needed to ship this crap all the way to Alberta?” . . Some of that stuff is still lingering in my house now… meaning it went from Ontario to Alberta and then through 5 different houses here. . . . That stuff isn’t coming to Montreal. . . I realize now that I needed those things because they gave me a sense of security and belonging. I didn’t have a sense of security or belonging in my life because I was living on terrifyingly unstable ground (or just flailing in the abyss - you choose). . . I don’t need those things anymore. . . The sense of security now lives within me and in the nurturing arms of my family.
