teenytynie: 3rd March is the day of “Peach blossom period” in Japan. Over 1000 years ago, people gave bad luck to paper doll and throw into river. Damn luck went under river, went to sea, and it locked under ocean — the land of death, old Japanese people believed it. 500 years ago, these dolls turned very gorgeous for girls of Samurai family. Samurai king and queen, ladies and soldiers doll palace, called “Hina” dolls. Hina means young and small—we called baby bird “Hina”, too. We still buy Hina dolls when a girl born in a family. Every girls own their Hina doll set. They are displayed with Ichimatsu, Haiko (crawling baby) or other Japanese gohun (white paste of oyster shell) dolls. In photo, Ichimatsu is under 5/8 inches tall (1.7cm) with movable head and limbs. Hina dolls only ¼ inches tall. Each of them were made by miniature doll artisans in Japan guild.
