profeminist: “After working in finance for over a decade and seeing so many people living paycheck to paycheck who were terrified of getting laid off, Marsha Barnes decided she wanted to help people – in particular women – learn how to take control of their financial lives. To reach people with limited means to travel, such as women living in domestic violence shelters, Barnes launched a mobile personal finance center based in a retrofitted school bus that she calls The Finance Bar. With national studies showing women’s financial confidence and knowledge significantly trailing men’s, Barnes says that she “realized there was really a need in our community for education around personal finances in general.” She holds workshops on the bus on a variety of personal finance basics such as creating a budget, reading a credit report, and managing debt – in locations ranging from college campuses to homeless shelters. To provide more on-going support, Barnes also set up a virtual membership club for women where they have access to more financial literacy resources and a supportive community. She says, “The young ladies in the virtual membership club can’t afford to pay someone $200 an hour to speak with them. They’re getting the best of both worlds with me.” To read more about Marsha Barnes’ The Finance Bar project on Yahoo Finance, visit http://yhoo.it/1MOyNej – you can also help support this non-profit venture on her website at http://www.thefinancebar.com/” As seen on the A Mighty Girl Facebook page THIS.
