Jenn Woodall, ‘Keep Going’, 2020Source“So today is a day where a lot of Canadians are using a hashtag on Twitter to talk about mental health and raise money. And while I love people sharing their stories, I’m always going to be critical of huge companies profiting off performing concern about mental health but not actually doing enough to make help accessible to everyone. I really encourage everyone to search out on Twitter because there are many people more articulate than myself. And especially read about the connection between Bell and Prison Calls. Also, these efforts typically only seem to focus on depression and anxiety and not different mental health conditions. While society has made progress in destigmatizing some mental illnesses, some are still widely vilified, misunderstood or make people react with fear. We need to make an effort to expand this discussion to more people and understand their struggles. This is obviously a homage to Akira, one of my favourite things. I had the idea a few years ago that playing with the pill imagery in Akira to discuss something else might be something I can do. I had friends critique this image to make it as strong as possible. I included various SSRIs and anti-psychotics in the image because I think part of this discussion needs to be normalizing psychiatric meds. Lots of people only need them for a time, but plenty need them permanently to function in their lives. Both are okay and neither deserve scorn or insulting comments on how maybe instead you should meditate or be positive.” -- source link
