tmirai:hadlais:rosalarian:Feminism is having a wardrobe malfunction.Does your brand of feminism remove barriers for women, or simply move them around? Does is expand options for women, or does it just shift them? You don’t liberate women by forcing them to choose option B instead of option A. What is comfortable for you might not be comfortable for someone else, and it’s entirely possible that what you see as oppressive, other women find comfortable or even downright liberating. Before you think the girl in the middle is a strawman, let me tell you I used to be her, back in my misguided youth. I considered myself the standard to which other people should adhere. But that was stupid. It’s not up to me to tell people how to dress, and it’s much nicer to let everyone choose for themselves. Some women would feel naked without a veil. Some women would find it restrictive. Some women would feel restricted by a bra. Some women would feel naked without one. Some women would feel restricted by a tight corset. Others love them. Some wear lots of clothes with a corset. Some only wear the corset and nothing else. What makes any article of clothing oppressive is someone forcing you to wear it. And it’s just as oppressive to force someone not to wear something that they want to wear.I have to agree with this. I have heard some commentary that says “You can wear traditional feminine clothing, but be aware that you are reinforcing a patriarchal standard by doing so.”And it’s just…that really disturbs me, as a person who just likes really fluffy, frilly, girly clothes. You shouldn’t deny people the things that make them feel comfortable. Embracing and loving femininity is part of my personal feminism. There are so many people out there who act like loving feminine clothes makes you vain, stupid, shallow. That dressing in a feminine way is somehow wrong or marks you as a bad woman. I mean, just look at the Taylor Swift songs that demonize girls in skirts. It’s true that a lot of beauty practice and products reinforce patriarchal ideas but those same practices and products can also empower and strengthen people. Some great commentary. This can be a delicate topic, especially when you get into clothing requirements for women of certain religions. I do think it’s important to be aware of what types of clothing and fashion practices are the products of patriarchal, sexist standards forced only upon women like Hadlais said. Yet that doesn’t mean that a woman who chooses to abide by them for any personal reason of hers isn’t a feminist or her stance is detrimental to the feminist movement. -- source link
