However, an investigation led by an insurance investigator named Richard Bales acquits Mrs. O'Leary’s cow and determined that the fire was caused by a carelessly discarded match thrown by a smoker named Daniel Sullivan.Regardless of the cause, the Great Chicago Fire burned for two days, destroying 17,400 buildings and causing the deaths of 300 people. -- source link
