Historic Pocket Pistol-.44 Philadelphia DerringerThis is the infamous derringer that John Wilkes Booth used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The assassination took place at Ford’s Theater during the showing of the British comedy, “My American Cousin”. Lincoln’s personal bodyguard, John Anderson, was tasked with guarding the door to his private viewing box. However, Anderson grew board of guard duty and stole away to a local salloon in order to get wasted. Booth, seeing this opportunity, crept up behind Lincoln and shot him point blank in the back of his skull, timing his shot with the funniest line of the play in order to muffle the gunshot. Lincoln’s partner in attendance, Major Henry Rathbone then tried to restain Booth, only to be stabbed by Booth’s knife. Booth then jumped onto the stage and in an act of flambouyance shouted “Sic Semper Tyrannis!” (Thus is the fate of tyrants). Lincoln drew his last breath at 7:22 AM the next morning. 12 days later Booth was shot and killed by a Union soldier while trying to escape to the south. Current Location: Fords Theatre National Historic Site, Washington D.C.Estimated Value: Priceless -- source link
