The Wine Lake of King Jie,King Jie was the last ancient Chinese ruler from the semi-legendary Xia Dynasty (2070 BC - 1600 BC). Described mostly in the Bamboo Annals, King Jie’s legacy is that of tyranny and incredible excess. A cruel and despotic ruler, there were three things he loved in life; food, women, and wine. During his reign he demanded the finest food brought in from all over the kingdom. Anyone who got his dishes wrong were beheaded. He had several wives and concubines, and it was not uncommon for large and lavish orgies to occur at his court.More than anything, however, King Jie loved his wine. In fact he drank it all the time, often drinking to the point of getting drunk. Chronicles note several instances where once intoxicated he forced his government ministers and chancellors to be ridden like a horse. When they refused, complained, or grew tired, he had them executed.King Jie’s most incredible act of excess was a small lake of wine created entirely for him, King Jie would sail about the lake in a small boat with his favorite concubine Mo Xi, spending the day drinking and engaging in orgies. Eventually the excesses of King Jie would get the best of him as the people grew weary of his tyranny and corruption. Under the leadership of a man named Shang Tang, 40 kingdoms formerly ruled by King Jie revolted. The revolt grew into a full blown revolution as the people of China rose up against King Jie. In the 31st year of his reign King Jie was deposed after his army was defeated at the Battle of Mingtiao. He died of illness in exile. -- source link
