Palmyra grew rich with the caravan trade that linked the Persian Gulf with the Mediterranean. Tombs for the wealthier citizens were built outside the city in underground rock-cut vaults, that contained compartments set in the walls to hold the bodies. Each compartment was sealed with a plaque like the LACMA bust, bearing a sculptured portrait of the deceased bearing a dedicatory inscription. -- source link
