mythologyofthepoetandthemuse:Workshop at Tanagra by Jean-Léon Gerome, 1893.Painting Breathes Life into Sculpture by Jean-Léon Gerome, 1893.The two paintings show the artist’s fascination with the archaeological findings of the so called “Tanagra Figures’, which are Hellenistic terracotta figurines of great elegance showing traces of polychromy (the figures were painted with watercolors). In these two paintings Gerome is trying to revive the original ancient settings of the workshops of Tanagra, a city in Boetia (Greece), that the famous figurines were made in a rather industrial fashion. Tanagra figures mostly depict real women of everyday life and rarely a goddess like Aphrodite. Their size is typically 10 to 20 centimetres high.Tanagra Figurine, Terracotta, 4th Century BCE, Tanagra, Boetia. Collection of the Altes Museum, Berlin, Germany.
