herrlindemann:TOPP - 2004German band Rammstein shocked TOPP after depression and anxiety.“I did not want to do anything, neither to live, eat or have sex,” reveals vocalist Till Lindemann. Rammstein is in the wind with a new album and on November 16 they will play in Spektrum, but tough guy Till is mostly looking forward to a fishing trip in the mountains…After Rammstein was in Norway, Till has several times called the record company to try to organize a fishing trip. If you have been to a Rammstein concert, you might never have thought that fishing was what was on the mind of the wild vocalist, but that’s how wrong you can be. Rammstein likes to shock, and TOPP’s meeting with two of the six men in suits at the Grand Hotel is no exception. One of them, Till, is huge and short-haired, the other, Flake, scrawny and long-haired.“We are rarely ourselves. We go into different roles, and we are not private personas now”, says Till. And we’re happy about that. . The band members play with cannibalism in their latest video Mein Teil, and have already provoked MTV so much that the song will not be shown on the commercial TV channel.“As long as the fans want what we make, we will continue to provoke. But the day our music does not reach people anymore then it is over,” says Till.- Do you think Mein Teil can turn as big as ‘Du hast’?“We do not expect it and do not really care either. But what do you think about the songs you have heard? It’s cool to hear what a lady thinks,” says Till and grins.I struggle a bit with the wording in German, and get help from the interpreter who is present during the interview.Sex is a recurring theme in the songs. How about their own sex life. Do you have a lot of sex?“We have a lot of sex, yes. Do you have a lot of sex?” Ask Till and clap his hands in excitement for his ingenious counter-question. “Did I throw you off now?” He teases. Flake mumbles something to the interpreter, and the interpreter translates.“Till has a lot of sex, but not Flake.”“Many of the things we sing about take place only in our minds. Not everything has happened,” says the keyboardist.- You both have children, what do they think of your songs?“My daughter is nine years old. She knows the songs and sings along, but fortunately does not understand what she is singing. For example, she has not asked me what masturbation is,” says Flake. Till’s daughter is 19 and is a bigger fan of bands like Muse, Radiohead and Coldplay.“She always asks for backstage passes, but that is because she wants to meet the other bands,” Till says.- Flake! I read that you were skeptical of the Rammstein project after the band was formed?“Yes I was! And I’m still skeptical,” he admits. Skepticism aside: Rammstein has been around since 1993, and Flake, Till, Oliver, Christoph, Paul and Richard have been together since the beginning. They have written music history with their provocative German metal rock, and have managed to keep their fan base even though not a third understand what they are singing.Have you ever considered singing in English?“No, no,” says Till firmly. “Why should we? When we were growing up, we did not understand what the Stones were singing either, but the music gave us a feeling. When Rammstein was formed, it was to do our own thing, and it’s about where we come from. We are from the German nation” says Till. You are known for crazy pyroshows, and for pissing on the audience. What’s the worst thing that happened to a guy during a show?“It must have been when we were in the states. It is not allowed to piss on the audience or show your dick. We used some thick neon light tubes, but these shattered. One cut up my whole stomach, while another ended up in the drummer’s shoulder,” Till says. He has often been injured, but claims that he is rarely scared.“Sometimes I get a little anxious afterwards, but never while a show is going on - then there is so much adrenaline,” Till says. But when a Rammstein supporter snuck up in the band’s eight meter high scaffolding, and was going to stage dive - then Till and Flake got nervous.“No one received him, and he fell straight into the asphalt. He looked half dead where he lay…”On the album Reise, Reise, one of the songs is about not wanting. What did you not want to do?“I did not want to do anything. A year ago I was feeling very down, and very depressed. I could not bear to do shit, not even eat. I did not bother to chew the food - everything was a chore,” Till reveals for the first time.Did you not even want sex…?“No… I did not want to live,” he confess. But luckily the vocalist recovered from the depression, regained his appetite, and not least his sex drive.“It was a tough period, but now it’s all good. There has actually been some work out as well. Not as much as before, but a little fitness,” says the former professional swimmer. -- source link
