1714-konzertmeister: Johann Sebastian Bach Postcard. (1907) A girl I used to know is in Leipzig, Germany this week for work. I’m like, “are you stopping at the Bach museum!?!” It probably didn’t occur to her, but it got me thinking of the importance of J.S. Bach to me. If you play some piano as a kid, you inevitably bump into his ‘Inventions’. Then there was the ‘Chorales’ when I was learning to read. Then revisiting them when first studying music theory in high school — 4-part harmony. Then my college roommate was studying the ‘Cello suites’ on electric bass to practice reading something besides boring method books. Then came music history & the ‘Well-tempered klavier”, which changed the world by helping make equal temperament the standard. Then there was ‘counterpoint in the style of J.S. Bach’ as a degree requirement. So yeah, to me it would be unbelievable to visit Bach’s house & the church where he performed in Leipzig. Dunno that I’ll ever make it there, so please go so I can live vicariously? -- source link
