The Battle of Midway is rightfully remembered as the major turning point in the war for the Pacific
The Battle of Midway is rightfully remembered as the major turning point in the war for the Pacific during WWII. The combatants were Japan against the US of A, and Japan had just sunk most of America’s fleet with their sneaky attack on Pearl Harbor that killed many sailors and civilians. Luckily, they happened to pick a day when all of the aircraft carriers – the backbone of any navy – were out doing training exercises. So what do the Americans do? They attack immediately, of course! …After rebuilding their fleet and training for a few months, that is.Thanks to some amazing codebreakers (and the British, though Americans don’t like to talk about it) they went into the Battle of Midway knowing the entire Japanese battle plan. Did that help? Hell no! When the it began, almost all American planes were downed without inflicting any serious damage. But there was one squadron of American dive bombers that got lost on the way to the battle. Which would be a bad thing, with them running low on fuel and in the middle of the biggest ocean in the world. Then they spot some Japanese aircraft carriers. And even more luckily, all three in the group were reloading their guns and completely helpless. They were easy pickings for the planes, the Americans won the battle of Midway, and the rest is, as they say, history. -- source link
