Brooklyn Navy Yard, 1903.In the foreground is the USS Texas, the United State’s first battleship. The Texas, with its side mounted turrets. managed to be obsolete a full 5 years before its commissioning in August, 1895. After running aground off Newport, Rhode Island, the Texas sank at dock in Brooklyn, which along with other mishaps gave it the reputation of being an unlucky ship. The Texas still did manage to serve in the Spanish American War, blockading Cuba and fighting at the battle of Santiago de Cuba.To the far right is the USS Buffalo, formerly of the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Brazilian Navy, which in 1903 was an auxiliary cruiser used as a training ship.In the background is probably the USS Alabama, BB-8. an Illinois Class battleship launched in 1898, showing how much warship design changed in just a few years. -- source link
