Deep TechThis is the E/V Nautilus — a 64 meter long, state-of-the-art research vessel.Carrying a team of scientists, engineers, and an able-bodied crew, the Nautilus sails the seas around North and South America on research expeditions, while providing us landlubbers with tales (and live video feed) of its travels on nautiluslive.org. The Nautilus’ missions usually involve studying deep-sea biology, geology, and archeology. Its ROVs—Hercules (the yellow one) and Argus (the more skeletal-looking one)—enable its team to take samples and hi-res imagery of undersea organisms, phenomena, and artifacts. The Nautilus herself is a well-equipped ship, sporting sonar and mapping technology to help locate prime spots for deep-sea exploration, and Telepresence, which allows rapid information exchange between the ship and the world wide web. It also has the usual cabins and living quarters, dining and recreational spaces, work areas, control rooms, labs, and equipment maintenance facilities one would expect of a world-class research vessel. Oh, and it comes with a gym too. Even deep-sea researchers need to stay in shape!Reference: Nautiluslive.orgImages’ source: NOAA Ocean Explorer -- source link
