During the long period between the Reformation and the 19th Century when priests were again allowed to be trained in Ireland, Irish men wishing to become Roman Catholic priests had to secretly escape the English occupiers and flee to the continent, frequently to Spain. This gorgeous 16th century building, with some utterly stunning interiors, at the University of Salamanca was one of their destinations. Once they completed studies and were ordained, they then took secret routes back into Ireland where, under considerable difficulties, they worked. -- source link
