A 1574 drawing of the Serpent Column in Istanbul. The column was initially created on the Greek island of Delphi in 478 BCE to commemorate the battle of Plataea, in which the Greeks defeated the Persians. The column originally supported a cauldron, which has been lost. The column was relocated to Constantinople by the Roman emperor Constantine in 324 CE. The serpents’ heads fell off around the year 1700 under uncertain circumstances.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
