On this day, 22 May 1968, footballers in Paris occupied the headquarters of the French Football Association as part of a national working class uprising. The players issued a statement demanding the immediate dismissal of football “profiteers”, and for football without profits and declaring “United, we will make football once again what it ought never to have ceased to be — the sport of joy, the sport of the world of tomorrow which all the workers have started building”.
