On this day, 17 May 1943, 12 Albanian communist partisan detachments attacked the town of Leskoviku which was being held by 1,000 Italian troops. After three days of fierce fighting, the partisans were victorious, killing several hundred fascist troops and seizing large amounts of equipment and weaponry. In July Italian forces invaded the region once more, but suffered heavy losses.
