The Protectors are a transparent green race of magical elf-like beings. (Jeff Dee, from the back cover of D&D module B3: Palace of the Silver Princess, TSR, 1981)When B3 was recalled and rewritten the cover art was not changed, so new versions of those encounters were created. In the original orange cover version the Protectors created a safe haven in the guard tower where lawful adventurers could rest and recover, but they don’t actually appear unless chaotic or neutral characters attempt to enter those rooms. In the final green cover version the Protectors watch over the palace’s territory called Haven. They appear in the party’s dreams to ask for help, then open a safe path to the palace, and may appear again in visions if the DM feels the party is stuck and needs hints.Erol Otus’ decapus on the front cover was kept as an ambush predator on the dining room ceiling, but lost its illusion abilities in the revised text. -- source link
