Reading Recommendation: Anyone who shares my enthusiasm for all things Spanish, those who have an interest in the lives of individuals engulfed by Civil War and the fascism which followed it, and even devotees of the Camino Santiago are likely to find this well-written and engaging book worth a read. Shulman follows the life of the Astorga born and raised (and now mostly forgotten) poet Leopoldo Panero. He started as a leftist and, initially for the sake of survival, under the chaotic conditions of the Civil War became a follower of Francisco Franco. Panero’s biography was from childhood a tortured and somewhat strange, if rather privileged, one. What I found most interesting was the effort of a literato to carve out a life and livelihood from the ruins of war and under the ever threatening fascism of Franco’s Spain. Shulman paints an engrossing and often chilling picture of Civil War and its aftermath as it impacted on a well-connected and fairly affluent poet and his family.
