irisbleufic:swan2swan:tyrantosaurus:sassy-werewolf:funky-gay-fey:lesbianbrachiosaurus:Seriously tho as someone who put literal years of effort into creating a Wikipedia hoax it’s basically impossible to get away with for more than like an hour. They’re fucking vigilant. I tried to build up trust by doing legit editing but my account got reviewed cause I approved a page that mismeasured the size of a ship by a few centimetersYES OMGi often use wikipedia to get basic information and then fact check with “more reliable sources” so my teachers don’t get pissed and it has ALWAYS BEEN ACCURATE. in fact, sometimes the “more reliable sources” turn out to be LESS ACCURATE THAN WIKIPEDIA. it’s SO easy to use and has SO much free information and it kinda pisses me off that we’re taught that wikipedia is the devil and should never be trusted when it’s a super good source of information. Some people need to hear this. Wikipedia is a great source of information but until it’s reputation is over done, a way to get around being unable to reference Wikipedia is to scroll down and check the references on the article itself. Saves you having to find a ton of resources on your own, and since these references are where the Wikipedia information is from, it means if you can find the right citation at the bottom, you can indirectly use Wikipedia as a source.Look, to be fair, back when Wikipedia first showed up it was VERY much the Wild Wild West. I let, and always have let, the undergrads I teach use Wikipedia. It always breaks my heart to see their astonishment when I tell them this is fine. Their teachers in high school and in other college courses have thoroughly conditioned them to be suspicious of it.At a time like this, when face-to-face education and physical library access are impossible for many to most of us, Wikipedia is a lifesaver. LET YOUR STUDENTS FUCKING USE IT -- source link
