amnhnyc: Behold, the spectacular stibnite! Fun fact: This stunning specimen, with its hundreds of bladelike crystals, will be one of the largest stibnites on public display in the world when the new Mignone Halls of Gems and Mineral opens on June 12. If it looks familiar to you, that might be because it first went on display in the Museum’s Grand Gallery in 2007. (It also reminds us of a certain highly-coveted throne). Weighing almost half a ton, the stibnite crystals were able to grow to such impressive lengths because they formed in a large underground cavity. Photo: D.
