TW for bullying Q & A WITH SMART GIRL JAZZ JENNINGS JESSICA: Jazz, how does it feel to be named one of Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls?JAZZ: I’m so honored to be named a smart girl. I think Amy’s organization is incredible and their motto is perfect for someone like me. “Change the World by Being Yourself” couldn’t be more fitting to describe my feelings.JESSICA: What’s an example of an experience you had where you had to stay true to yourself, even when it was difficult?JAZZ: When I was only eight years old I was banned from playing girls’ soccer just because I’m transgender. I was told I had to play with the boys or not play at all. I was so angry and upset. As we fought this discrimination for over 2 years I had to dig deep and stay strong. Part of this strength was to remain true to who I am. I’m transgender, I’m proud of myself, and even when others try to tell me it’s wrong I remind myself that it’s never wrong to be your true self.JESSICA: How have you handled other kids who have teased you, or excluded you, just because you are transgender?JAZZ: Other kids can be really mean sometimes, but I try not to let them get me down. I always remember that I have amazing family members and friends who love me no matter what, and that gets me through the tough times. My favorite quote is by Dr. Seuss: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”JESSICA: Why is it important that we get our book into elementary school libraries around the country?JAZZ: I find that younger kids are less prejudiced. They haven’t formed opinions that are set forth by society and are willing to open their minds to new thoughts and ideas. I hope that once they read the book they will think kids like me are cool and no different from anyone else.JESSICA: What words of advice do you have for other kids who are struggling to be their authentic selves?JAZZ: There are many kids who just want to be their authentic selves, but are afraid of being judged. These kids who are struggling need to know that they are not alone. They need to love themselves and be proud of who they are regardless of what others say or think.”Read the full piece here -- source link
