The Monuments Men, a movie based on the book by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter, centers on a World War II platoon assigned to rescue stolen artwork from Nazis in Germany and return them to their rightful owners. In 1943, the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program was established and the men and women of the MFAA were known as Monuments Men.Photo Courtesy of National Archives and Record AdministrationBrooklyn Museum’s former Head of Conservation, Sheldon Keck, was a Monuments Man. Mr. Keck established the Museum’s Conservation Laboratory in 1934. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and joined the MFAA shortly thereafter. Lt. Keck served with his Monuments Man colleague Captain Walter “Hutch” Huchthausen. They had been searching for an altarpiece when they got lost in enemy territory; Hutch was unfortunately killed in action. After the war, Lt. Keck returned to the Brooklyn Museum and continued his restoration work alongside his wife and fellow conservator Caroline until 1961. The Kecks were regarded as two of New York’s most respected art restorers, and together, they trained almost 150 conservators during their careers. We are very excited about the release of The Monuments Men and its insight into the vital effort to save and protect cultural treasures.
