This year marks the 20th anniversary of our beloved flagship program, Target First Saturday! We’re so hype to welcome everyone again next month for Women’s History Month. We’re celebrating the last weekend of Roots of the Dinner Party so we’re serving up a full course menu of programs:At 6, Beverly Bond releases her new book Black Girls Rock! Owning Our Magic, Rocking Our Truth, and and at 8:30, the fearless queens of Brown Girls Burlesque perform Act Like a Lady! Strippin’ Fo’ the Culture, theatrical burlesque celebrating sisterhood and reclaiming sexuality. Our mainstage will be on the third floor this month with a fire lineup. All women-identified dance company MICHIYAYA kicks us off with a performance and workshop — open to all levels. Leikeli47, one of our favorite breakout musicians from Bed-Stuy plays a special hometown set on the heels of her new ep Wash & Set. Check out her new video for her track Attitude— if it sounds familiar, that’s because you probably heard and loved it on Insecure. Sabine Blaizin (Oyasound) closes out the night with an afrobeat and global soul set alongside percussionist Courtnee Roze.Since it’s the last weekend to see our special exhibition Roots of The Dinner Party, Assistant Curator (and First Saturday regular) Carmen Hermo gives one last insider look at the show at 5:30! And yes—to all my intersectional art history nerds out there— she will address the construction of the iconic artwork as well as the critiques. If you’re still hungry for more, there’s artmaking, poetry with Cave Canem, a community talk with the women of Think! Chinatown and one last feminist book club with Glory Erin of Well-Read Black Girl.If that’s not enough to bring you out —it will also be the opening weekend of our anticipated David Bowie Is exhibition. Be sure to get your tickets in advance.Pro-tip: we might reach capacity, so starting at 5pm we ask that everyone enter at the front of the Museum. Keep in mind there could be lines for entry. We will have separate lines for Bowie e-ticket holders, Members, and general admission. Make sure to check the lineup and arrive early so you don’t miss your favorite acts!We do it all for the culture and community so you know what to do. Come through, see art, make art, grab a drink, learn something new, meet someone new, and don’t forget to tag us on the ‘gram! #firstsaturdaysbkmPosted by Lauren A. Zelaya -- source link
