What does it mean to have a seat at the table? Who gets to decide? Judy Chicago and her team evidence the importance of carving space for multiple representations in the proverbial table of art history, as displayed in her iconic piece, The Dinner Party, and her work with other woman artists in spaces like Womanhouse, the woman-centered feminist art exhibition and performance space. In InterseXtions: Gender and Sexuality, our 4th year of our paid LGBTQ+ teen internship, we’ve explored representation, feminism, and art through an intersectional queer lens, and asked ourselves where lgbtq young people fit in this narrative.Join BkM teens on Thursday, March 1st 5-7pm for an intimate evening of exploring intersectional feminism, queer history and representation, and art making during our next LGBTQ+ teen event, InterseXtions: Teen Dinner Party. “While it’s important to celebrate the contribution of canonical female figures, it’s equally important to celebrate contributions of queer and trans people and people of color who are overlooked or forgotten, as history is often written through a cisgender white lens,” says Anna, senior teen leader of InterseXtions. “I’m excited to educate teens on the importance and relevance of intersectional feminism, and the impact of inclusivity and representation within creative spaces.”Our teens will lead all activities including an original film screening, group discussions, interactive gallery talks, and abstract portrait making of your fave queer icons, based on the exhibition Roots of The Dinner Party: History in the Making. We’ll explore this iconic work in feminist art history, and offer desserts for the stomach and the mind.Free and open to all LGBTQ+ teens and their allies, ages 14+.Let’s go beyond the table.Posted by Lindsay C.
