Teens, 1950sSoda Fountains: In their time, soda fountains flourished in pharmacies, ice cream parlors, candy stores, dime stores, department stores, milk bars and train stations. They served an important function as a public space where neighbors socialized and exchange community news. In the early 20th century, many fountains expanded their menus and became lunch counters, serving light meals as well as ice cream sodas, egg creams, sundaes, and such. Soda fountains reached their height of popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. In the 50s they were considered a great place for teenagers to meet or to go on dates. Not only did they now serve Hamburgers and French Fries alongside ice cream concoctions but jukeboxes were often placed specifically in soda fountains to draw the young crowd with their love of the rock and the roll music! -- source link
