deniedmysign:scarletgoldenthorn:fridjitzu:did-you-kno:Scientists invented fabric that makes electricity from motion and sunlight. To create the fabric, researchers at Georgia Tech wove together solar cell fibers with materials that generate power from movement. It could be used in “tents, curtains, or wearable garments,” meaning we’d virtually never be without power. SourceY'all are fucking idiots. Clean energy will NEVER be enough to replace the energy we have now. We’d have to tear down DOZENS of forests just to fit enough windmills and solar panels to get even a QUARTER (probably less, tbh) of the energy we can produce now.Yeah, sure, when they’ve already calculated that a few square miles of panels in the empty ass Arizona desert could power the whole nation. But ok, fracking and the diminishing petroleum supply is worlds better.Man the comments on this… you people seriously need to read a paper or something. Ok folks let me lay this on you:Obama gets electedPours gov support behind fracking, ocean drilling(this doesn’t last due to Horizon spill) and renewable/green sourcesUS sees a HUGE jump in wind generation in the Great Plains region(from Canada to Texas between the Rockies and the Mississippi, basically). Major breakthroughs in solar panel and battery tech supported by US gov funding(an industry we could have controlled, if Rs hadn’t sabotaged the subsidies for it, prompting solar tool production to decamp to China, which has also seen an ENORMOUS jump in renewable production, and related flattening of its carbon consumption). In response to fracking, wind, and solar, US foreign-sourced oil consumption starts dropping. At the same time, Obama negotiates a nuclear power deal with Iran, the carrot to them allowing outside observation being that they can sell their oil internationally without restriction. This threatens to, over time, bring nearly ALL of Iran’s massive oil production onto the international market, undercutting Saudi Arabia’s market dominance.Hoping to cut this off before it can start, and also hoping to drive Fracking and renewables out of the US/Canada market, SA starts dumping their oil stock, driving the price of crude through the damn floor.THAT is why oil is cheap, and THAT is why gas and heating-oil is cheap right now: as a direct result of US Energy and Foreign Policy under Obama, shepherded for most of his term by Hillary Clinton. Oh, and btw, it worked even better than our leaders hoped because:Saudia Arabia Negotiates OPEC Price Floor. You get it? Saudi Arabia was trying to drive down the price to drive out its competitors, but the pain of super cheap oil has become so great they’re backing off. Obama BROKE them! Through Policy!!! Do you GET how BIG this is??? Even WITH their reserves, SA can’t handle what we can now do with fracking/renewable sources. Hell, they had to come to terms with Iran to get this deal in the first place! You get what that means? Even IRAN, which is still trying to rebuild its export capacity, is worried about the power Western fracking/renewable production has to drive down oil prices!!THAT is how successful Clean energy has already been, and that’s with just less than eight years of US gov support -not even the really serious sort of backing carbon gets just some tax breaks, business subsidies, and research grants- AND in the face of the Kochs trying to prevent its expansion through state laws. THAT is what they call “A Successful Policy Initiative”. Imagine what we could do if we continued those renewable investments, or even expanded them. Oil ain’t irreplaceable: Oil’s Already Been Broke! And most of you folks are so out of it you don’t even realize it |:T -- source link
