The “elephant’sfoot” of the Chernobyl disaster. The photo was taken not longafter the radiation weakened. The elephant’sfoot is a solid mass below the core’s original location; it is madeup of a small amount of nuclear fuel, mixed with concrete, sand, andcore sealing that the fuel had melted through. In 1986, itsradiation level was 10,000 roentgens per hour. A person exposed toit for only 30 seconds would become dizzy and fatigued a week later. Two minutes of exposure would cause your body’s cells to soonhaemorrhage; four minutes would cause vomiting, diarrhea and fever. And five minutes of exposure would leave you with only two days tolive. The elephant’sfoot in 1996.Ten years afterthe meltdown, the foot was giving off only 1/10 the amount ofradiation it once had. But eight and a half minutes of exposurewould still prove fatal. -- source link
