redbloodedamerica:Nuclear Power is the Safest Energy Source, by Farby Kevin RyanThere was a brief scare north of the border this morning after an emergency alert was issued at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in Ontario, Canada. It turns out the alert was issued erroneously, and was corrected within 38 minutes. Yet, despite the fact that nobody was hurt and no real ‘incident’ even took place, news of the false alert traveled to newspapers and news feeds around the world, stoking the public’s fear of nuclear power. It’s a fear that has almost no basis in reality. Deaths from nuclear power accidents have been almost nonexistent since its inception, and are especially small when you consider that nuclear power supplies an enormous amount of our energy needs. The Pickering plant alone produces 14% of the electricity consumed by Ontario’s 14.57 million residents. At full capacity, the station can generate 3,100 megawatts of electricity at any given moment. Overall, nuclear energy supplies electricity for 60% of Ontario residents, making it the province’s largest source of power. And yet there have been no real incidents to speak of, and certainly none that have caused deaths, there or in Canada. Ever.Meanwhile, everyday we scroll past stories of oil refinery fires, deadly air pollution statistics, and even dam collapses without much notice. Ironically, it’s the ubiquity of death and destruction caused by the more traditional sources of energy that makes people fail to notice them anymore. And the rarity of nuclear power accidents that cause them to be so loudly publicized when they do occur. So it might come as a surprise to learn that the actual data shows that nuclear power is by far the safest source of energy.More people die falling off rooftops while installing solar power panels.SOURCES: https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2019/03/11/it-sounds-crazy-but-fukushima-chernobyl-and-three-mile-island-show-why-nuclear-is-inherently-safe/#58bafad81688https://www.statista.com/statistics/494425/death-rate-worldwide-by-energy-source/http://nyc-cca.com/DeathsPerTWH.htmlhttps://www.eastcountymagazine.org/dark-side-“green”-wind-turbine-accidents-injuries-and-fatalities-raise-serious-safety-concernshttps://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CCDPHP/DEODC/OHB/FACE/Pages/Solar.aspx -- source link
