lebedame-wegelagerin:vinceaddams:Look at this delightful little pastel man! His coat looks like candy.Magasin des Modes Nouvelles, June 1789.I like how the Plackets are a constrasting Colour, should do that too some Time! Also it kinda looks like she ordered him to lay his Hat on the Ground…They’re actually watch chains! Around this time it was fashionable to wear two of them, often with your real watch on one and a fake watch on the other, because who wants to waste money on a second watch? These appear to be fairly plain ones, like this, but there were also very fancy & colourful ones.(British, late 18th century, The Met.)Here’s a clearer image of one being worn.(Elijah Boardman, 1789)However, I do know of one fashion plate where the breeches do indeed have contrasting plackets!!(Magasin des Modes, April 1788.) You can just barely see them, but you can also see a watch chain in a different colour, and the red plackets match the red kneebands and piping! Or whatever that is. Maybe just an applied strip of fabric? That would make more sense than piping for the inseam. Piping in an inseam would be weird and bulky. -- source link
