shadedareas:Rebecca Sugar : LGBT Hero! TL:DR - Rebecca Sugar, creator of Steven Universe, has recently come out as bisexual. This explains why her show has lesbian and bisexual characters who are treated with grace and kindness. Rebecca Suger wants kids to understand that no matter who you are, you deserve to be loved. The Long Story San Diego Comicon always means big news for the world of media and 2016 is no exception. Most of the panels have interviews or new previews, but the panel for Steven Universe included an announcement by the creator. When asked why the show had so many strong female characters and LGBTQ themes, Rebecca Sugar replied: “Well, in large part it’s based on my experience as a bisexual woman. These things have so much to do with who you are, and there’s this idea that these are themes that should not be shared with kids, but everyone shares stories about love and attraction with kids.” The news of her bisexuality was no surprise for long term fans of the show. Steven Universe has featured multiple lesbians, a bisexual woman, and an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Never once does Steven wonder why Ruby and Sapphire are not attracted to men or why Pearl was clearly in love with Rose Quartz. He accepts these relationships as love without needing any explanation. Steven does not question that bisexuality exists and these characters will help young bisexuals feel like they exist too. Steven Universe also allows kids to see LGBTQ relationships as love rather than political statements. Far too many queer couples are marginalized in television. Even if the intentions are good; the couples always faces homophobia or worse, die in throwaway manner. Steven Universe is not only one of the only kids shows with canon LGBTQ characters, it’s one of the few shows where these characters are happy. It’s even worse for bisexual men and women because bi-erasure is a real problem both in the real world and media. In the real world, bisexual people are treated as lying, confused, promiscuous, or even fetishized. In the media it is even worse because there are almost no established bisexual characters, and most of them are denied by other characters or treated as either gay or straight. Rebecca Sugar is one of many young bisexuals who grew up surrounded by this problem and she has worked hard to create a cartoon that breaks these molds. Steven Universe shows a gentle understanding of the LGBTQ world that could really only come from someone who understands it themselves. When Rebecca Sugar came out in front of everyone at SDCC, it was clear she was nervous, however, the crowd responded with thunderous applause. There has been an outpouring of support on the internet: for her courage to be true to herself in such a public manner and her willingness to talk about bisexuality while most of the world likes to pretend it doesn’t exist. With Rebecca Sugar at the helm, Steven Universe will continue to show love and diversity hopefully for years to come.About the Author Kelsey LaCroix majored in Creative Writing at Roger Williams University.
