The Colt Detective FBI Special,While the .38 Colt Detective was a favorite of police departments, Federal agencies, and security companies all over the country, perhaps its most prolific user was the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In the early 1930’s the Colt Detective was made the official sidearm of the Bureau. The reason for this was simple, most FBI Agents were plaincloathes lawmen, so they needed a firearms that was simple to use and easy to carry. However, the FBI requested their own special model. The Colt Detective FBI Special was identical to the regular Colt Detective with the exception that it had a removable shroud over the hammer. The purpose of this was to prevent the hammer from snagging on clothing when it was drawn. The Colt Detective would continue to serve the FBI into the 1960’s and even into the 1970’s. It would be replaced with semi automatic pistols in the late 1970’s and 1980’s.peashooter, however, still knows some old timer lawmen who swear by their snubby Colts. -- source link
